As many of you know, my approach to wellness revolves around understanding and optimizing the gut-brain axis and addressing our health from a holistic perspective. This week, I’d like to discuss a groundbreaking area of research that underscores the interconnectedness of our body systems—specifically, the link between colon cancer and the bacteria found in our mouths.

Recent studies have revealed that certain bacteria, commonly associated with gum disease, are now being found in colon tumors. Here is the article that I am referencing: Colon Cancer Linked to Mouth Bacteria
This discovery points to a potential oral systemic connection that could influence colon cancer risk. The bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum, which plays a role in dental plaque and gum disease, has been detected in tissues and lymph nodes of colon cancer patients.
This finding is particularly significant as it suggests that managing our oral microbiome may be a step towards mitigating cancer risks. It emphasizes the importance of oral health, not just for preventing tooth decay and gum disease, but as a crucial element of overall health.

Here’s why this matters: your mouth serves as a gateway to the rest of your body. Poor oral hygiene can lead to the migration of harmful bacteria into your bloodstream and potentially to other parts of your body, including the digestive tract. This migration can contribute to inflammatory responses and may be linked to the development of cancerous cells in the colon.

How Can You Protect Yourself?
  1. Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing and flossing can reduce the presence of harmful bacteria in your mouth. I personally HATE flossing so I use a waterpic, game-changer!  I also recommend periodic dental cleanings to maintain optimal oral health.
  2. Diet: Incorporate foods that promote a healthy microbiome. High-fiber foods, probiotics, and anti-inflammatory foods can support both your oral and gut health. You can use my Leaky Gut Diet to learn how to eat better.
  3. Regular Screenings: Early detection of colon cancer greatly increases the chances of a successful treatment. Regular screenings, especially if you are over the age of 50 or have a family history of the disease, are crucial.  Keep in mind that you can do a test as simple as a stool sample, rather than having a colonoscopy.  The test is called Cologuard.
  4. Whole Body Health: Continue to support your overall health through regular exercise, stress management, and a balanced diet. Remember, everything in your body is connected, and holistic health practices support every part of you.

In our practice, we take these connections seriously and always aim to treat the whole person—not just the symptoms but the underlying causes of discomfort and disease. Whether through nutritional guidance, chiropractic care, or lifestyle modifications, our goal is to provide you with a comprehensive plan for your health.

I encourage you to think of your health as a complex, interconnected system where balance is key. Protecting your oral health is just as important as taking care of your heart, brain, or any other part of your body.
