Ready for three tips to heal your gut? In todays episode I talk about a patient that’s not ready for massive change, she wants to take it slow.
Sometimes as a doctor/health coach I need to meet people where they are and work at their pace to bring them to the “promised land” of health. I have to make compromises. I have to adjust my energy which can be 160 mph down to the 55 mph and that’s OK. Compromising doesn’t mean failing, compromising means that we’re still moving closer to our ultimate goal.
The person I am working with in this video doesn’t want to follow the elimination/reintroduction AI Paleo diet that I recommended. So I had to figure out what she should do. She explained to me that she always feels worse after large meals so I use that as a starting point. I believe that if you listen to the signals that your body gives you then you can make progress. So she was able to implement these 3 simple suggestions.
1. Eat from small plates. Psychologically when we use a small plate and fill it up, we are more satisfied than if we have a large plate that is half empty. Same amount of food but different effects on our brain
2. 70% veggies. If 70% of the volume of your plate is filled with the right type of vegetables then your calories go down, your fiber goes up and the micronutrients that make you healthier are ingested which in turn gets you more satisfied.
3. Chew and rest. It takes about 20 minutes for the fullness in your stomach to reach your brain so if you eat too quickly and don’t give your brain the time to register that you’ve actually eaten enough then you can pack in a larger quantity of food than you need and your symptoms will return. Simply slow down and enjoy the taste of your food.
